THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FINANCING
RECRUITMENT MODALITIES
Since Decree No. 2009-464 of April 23, 2009, the Research Allowance (ADR) and Higher Education Monitor Benefit from which researchers engaged in the preparation of a doctoral thesis benefited, has been replaced by the contract doctoral.
The awarding of Doctoral Contracts is the subject of a recruitment competition at the beginning of July of each year.
Candidates apply for subjects identified as priorities in terms of scientific policy by the establishments.
Applications are examined exclusively at the local level within the Doctoral School.

The doctoral contract is a three-year employment contract, signed between the doctoral student and a public institution of higher education and research or by a public research institute. It is characterized by a remuneration fixed by ministerial decree. It allows the doctoral student to devote himself fully and exclusively to his research work for the preparation of his thesis.
The doctoral contract sets a minimum remuneration, indexed to the evolution of civil service remuneration: since February 1, 2017, it amounts to 1,769 euros gross monthly for a research activity alone. The additional missions carried out within the framework of the contract give rise to additional monthly remuneration calculated according to the number of hours or days carried out.
Doctorants CIFRE
For more than 30 years, the CIFRE system – Conventions Industrielles de Formation par la REcherche – has subsidized any company under French law that hires a doctoral student to place him at the heart of a research collaboration with a public laboratory. The work will lead to the defense of a thesis in three years.The CIFREs are fully funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.

- Some thesis supervisors may have funding through the national ANR program. Obtaining this type of financing is done by tender.
- Some employees can do a thesis in parallel with their professional activity. This activity must be related to the research activity. For example: a doctor can do a thesis in parallel with his nursing activity.
- Some theses can be funded by an industrial partner.
