  • benefit from funding or exercise a salaried activity for the duration of the thesis.·
  • the ED E-S conditions registrations and re-registrations by planning/carrying out a training course included in the Individual Training Agreement (generated from ADUM). Each doctoral student must prepare such a plan annually, choosing from among the training courses available to them (see “Our training courses”) + the authorization of the Email address (pdf). The return of this training plan, in the form of an individual skills book, is mandatory in order to be able to defend your thesis.·
  • To be able to register, each doctoral student must also constitute, from the 1st year, a scientific monitoring committee for the thesis. it is responsible for evaluating the smooth running of the thesis and must produce an annual report which conditions re-enrollment in the next year. At the start of the 2017 academic year, doctoral students enrolling in the 1st year will be offered a “Thesis Advisor” representing the ED (also called “Thesis Sponsor”). • The duration of the thesis is normally 3 years. Exemptions are possible for registration in the 4th year, but are conditioned by (i) a positive opinion from the thesis monitoring committee (ii) a reasoned request from the doctoral student and his supervisors (iii) a progress report and (iv) funding available for this extensiondf

Most of the coins will be generated by the ADUM registration software, except for the following 2 coins, which can be downloaded here :

Report of the thesis monitoring committee

(compulsory document for all years)

Report of the interview with the referent

(compulsory document for re-registration in 2nd year)

Beyond the 3rd year, you must also complete a thesis extension request (compulsory document) available on ADUM.

Lecturers, EPST research managers and EPIC and EPST engineers, who are not authorized to direct research, must request authorization in order to be able to co-direct a doctoral student registered at UBFC, under the responsibility of a colleague authorized to direct. researches.

Other personalities (not belonging to higher education establishments, public research organizations or research foundations), holders of a doctorate, wishing to direct or co-direct theses must follow the procedure below (paragraph 2 of chapter 16 of the decree of May 25, 2016, consolidated by the decree of July 1, 2016).

This internal procedure also meets one of the regulatory conditions for registration for the Habilitation to Direct Research (HDR).  Article 4 of the ministerial decree of november 23, 1988 specifies that the file must show the experience of the candidate in the animation of research.

Each ED defines the maximum number of simultaneous co-directions without HDR by the same person as well as the total number of co-directions, since September 1, 2016 (date of entry into force of the decree of May 25, 2016).

Article 11 ED ES regulations – excerpt: “….In order to encourage HDR defenses rather than the multiplication of co-supervisions, the ED ES considers that from the completion of 3 co-directions of thesis, crowned with success…HDR must be supported. …..In addition, a thesis co-supervisor without HDR will not be able to co-supervise more than 2 theses simultaneously.” The request for co-direction authorization must be submitted to the Doctoral School (ED) to which the research unit is attached and must include:

–     the co-direction request form without HDR (doc);

–      a CV ;

–      the list of work of the applicant.

The request is examined by the president of UBFC, who decides on a proposal from the director of the ED and after consulting the CAC restricted to HDR holders.

This authorization is required for each new co-direction.

Order of May 25, 2016 (modified by the order of July 1, 2016) relating to doctoral training and the doctoral degree, article 11 paragraphs 2 and 3:

“To be enrolled in a doctorate, the candidate must hold a national master’s degree or another diploma conferring the grade of master, at the end of a training course or professional experience establishing his aptitude. research. If this diploma condition is not met, the head of the establishment may, by way of derogation and on the proposal of the Council of the Doctoral School, enroll in doctorates people who have completed studies of an equivalent level or benefiting from the validation of acquired experience provided for in article L. 613-5 of the education code”.

Students wishing to register for a doctorate at UBFC and who do not hold a Master’s degree (or a Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies) in France or issued by a university signatory to the Bologna process, are invited to follow this procedure Master’s exemption request (pdf)

The request, addressed to the president of UBFC, must be submitted to the Doctoral School (ED) to which the research unit is attached.

It must include:

–      a cover letter ;

–      a CV ;

– a summary of the research project of maximum one page;

– certified copies of the originals of all diplomas obtained and copies of their translation into French (sworn translation);

– the transcript of the diploma equivalent to the master’s level;

– The detailed opinion of the prospective thesis director, countersigned by the director of the research unit.

After examination of the request and opinion of the director of the ED, a letter is sent to the candidates informing them of the opinion.

A list of candidates exempted from a master’s degree will be presented for information to the UBFC Academic Council.

Note : In order to facilitate the thesis registration process, subject to the favorable agreement to the master’s exemption request, it is strongly recommended to download the registration file at the same time as the constitution of the exemption file. In the event that a joint supervision is envisaged, it is recalled that the agreement must be signed during the first year of registration in the two contracting universities, but can be examined in parallel with the request for exemption.

In order to encourage the mobility of doctoral students, the Department of Research and Doctoral Studies of the Université Bourgogne Franche-Comté (UBFC) establishes the “European Doctorate” label.

The implementation of this label is not defined by a regulatory text and remains an initiative of the establishments. It has already been issued in many French universities since 1992 (Montpellier, La Rochelle, Lille, Limoges, Aix-Marseille, Nice, Lyon, etc.).

The label is requested before the defense of the thesis and is reserved for students from the 28 countries of the European Union[1], extended to the other free trade states (Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein). This is a qualification that should not be confused with the procedure for conducting a thesis in joint supervision, but to which it can be added. The “European Doctorate” consists of a certificate added to the classic doctoral degree issued by UBFC and signed by its president.

The “European Doctorate” is awarded when the student has met the four criteria set by the Confederation of Rectors of the European Union (now European University Association, EUA):

1) Prior to the defence, the work is examined by two colleague rapporteurs, authorized to direct research, belonging to two establishments other than UBFC, including at least one non-French European. The reports must clearly mention that the research work can be the subject of a doctoral award and reach the doctoral school four weeks before the defense.

2) The composition of the jury is defined by the texts with at least one member of the jury belonging to a higher education establishment of a European State other than UBFC.

3) At least part of the defense must be carried out in a European national language other than the national language of the country where the doctorate was prepared.

4) The doctoral student must have completed a research stay of at least three months in a member country of the European Union.

Administrative process

The request must be made to the doctoral school by the doctoral student no later than three months before the defense using the application form, to which will be attached the mobility report co-signed by the UBFC thesis director and the overseas hospitality team manager.

The application must be validated by the doctoral school at the time of the proposal of the rapporteurs and the members of the jury.

Authorization to write and defend in a European language other than French will be issued by the director of the doctoral school. If the thesis manuscript is written in a European language other than French, a significant summary must be written in French.

In addition, the defense report drawn up by the president of the jury must specify that part of the defense was carried out in a language of the European Union other than French, with a view to the awarding of the European label.

The jury that grants the “European Doctorate” label specifies this in the defense report. A certificate will then be issued to the student at the same time as his certificate of successful completion of the doctorate.
