Scientific Committee for Thesis Follow-up - CSST

The scientific thesis monitoring committee is one of the two components of the individual monitoring committee.

The ED ES has set up a thesis monitoring committee system. This committee is mandatory and must be made up of two personalities from outside the thesis supervisor’s research team, including one from outside the University. The participation of a representative of the ED can be requested.

The committee meets once a year and a report must be completed and submitted to the secretariat at the same time as the registration file. Its role is mainly to advise and guide the doctoral student to ensure the smooth running of the thesis.

From the 4th year, the committee must meet a second time if re-registration is planned. The committee’s report must be provided upon re-registration.

The thesis monitoring committee is a structure that meets annually for at least the first two years of the doctoral student’s thesis. The doctoral student, his supervisors and at least two external personalities participate, at least one of whom must not belong to the ED. It is made compulsory by the Environnements-Santé doctoral school, and determines re-registration for the following years. Its reasoned positive opinion is in particular mandatory for a derogatory request for registration in the 4th year. Ideally, for a 1st year, the meeting date can be between 6 and 10 months after the start of the thesis, then at the end of the following years.

The monitoring committee should be seen as an opportunity offered to the doctoral student to take stock of his activities. It makes it possible to present and discuss the work carried out, the projects for the following year (projects for experiments, training, etc.) and to present any difficulties encountered (difficulties of all kinds: scientific, material, relational, etc.) A private interview between the doctoral student in the absence of his supervisors, and vice versa, is strongly recommended by the ED.

It is therefore a valuable tool for the doctoral student and his supervisors in the development of the thesis.
